If you’re a seasoned non-animal food eater, dipping your toe into the waters of a plant-based diet for Veganuary, or you simply fancy a change from pie and chips, this blog post is for you. In it, we round up our favourite vegan-friendly places to eat near Camber Sands. Some are dedicated plant-based establishments, while others offer a range of vegan dishes on their menu (at the time of writing, their menus display at least three vegan dishes to choose from). But all make great places for a meal out when you’re on holiday in this part of East Sussex.
Best for breakfast and brunch – The Fig
If you’re looking for a hearty way to start the day, head for this cosy venue in the heart of Rye. Fresh, local produce takes pride of place on the menu with plant-based dishes getting plenty of limelight. Try the Avo Smash or the Bean Quesadillas for breakfast or go for the Dahl or Persian Cauliflower for a more filling meal.
Find this deliciousness at 2 High Street, Rye.
Best for vegan curries – Mahdi Lounge
Indian and Bangladeshi cuisine does, of course, champion vegetarian dishes, and at Mahdi Lounge, you’ll find a good selection. As well as dedicated vegan curries such as the Balti Vegetable and the Vegetable Bhuma, there’s a wide range of rice dishes including biriyani, plus vegetable sides and naan bread.
Get your vegan curry fix at 32-34 Cinque Ports Street, Rye.
Best for sea views and sunsets – Teddy’s Beach Diner
With its upper-floor position, panoramic sea views come guaranteed at this café and bar, also renowned for its cocktails at sundown. The menu doesn’t quite spoil vegans for choice, but there are enough dishes to ring the changes, including a house vegan platter.
Soak up the sea views at Marina Pavillion, St Leonards on Sea
Best for Anglo-Asian comfort food – Remy’s Café Kulinarya
The Art-Deco façade might be enough to draw you in at this vegan-friendly place to eat in Hastings, also ranked among the best independent restaurants in the UK. On the menu sits a surprising combo of Filipino and English cuisine, with a smattering of vegan offerings at lunch and dinner.
Taste how East meets West at 21 Kings Road, St Leonards on Sea.
Best for South American vegan – Sobremesa
Why not taste how South America does animal-free when you’re on holiday at Camber Sands? This restaurant brings together Peruvian, Brazilian and Mexican cuisine in its eclectic menu, where vegans will find one of the best choices in this part of East Sussex. Start with beetroot tartare, continue with an enchilada and Bahian curry, before you finish with picarones, aka Peruvian doughnuts.
Go all plant at 46 Sackville Road, Bexhill-on-Sea
Best for bistro-style vegan dining – Wickham Bistro
Whether you’re here for brunch or lunch, a vegan feast is a given. The lunch menu includes at least a couple of all-plant options, including an innovative stuffed sweet potato, starring chestnuts as the main ingredient. Their Sunday roast can also go fully vegan. The chef’s culinary skills have French roots, so expect some seriously fine dining.
Dine in style at 11-13 Wickham Avenue, Bexhill-on-Sea.
Best for vegan pub grub – The Owl
Our last suggestions for vegan-friendly places to eat near Camber Sands couldn’t be nearer because this lovely pub sits just yards from the beach at Camber. It’s even within walking distance of some of our Camber Sands cottages! This venue serves pub grub with a touch of sophistication, so your vegan fish is actually beer-battered banana blossom, while the falafel burger comes with romesco sauce.
Find these vegan choices at 11 Old Lydd Rd, Camber.
