Summer gets the attention. We rather like what comes next. In autumn the beach goes quiet and the dogs get the whole of it back. The evenings are for lighting the fire. Here is what you need to know to decide whether an autumn break at Camber suits you, and which cottage to pick.
Quick answer
- Where. Camber Sands, East Sussex. Rye is 3.8 miles by road from our White Sand cottages and 5.6 miles from the Coastguard Cottages at Jury’s Gap.
- What autumn is like. Much quieter than summer. The beach is enormous, and we think the light early and late in the day is the best of the year.
- Dogs. From 1 October the whole of Camber Sands is open to dogs until the end of April. The beach at Jury’s Gap has no dog restrictions at any time of year.
- The sea. On average the water at Camber is warmer in October than in June.
- Warmth. Central heating in every cottage. Five have a real log burner, and from October to March we leave a starter basket of logs.
- Sizes. Our cottages sleep from two to nine and are let as whole houses at one price, whatever the size of your party.
- Arriving. Check in from 3pm, let yourselves in, check out by 10am. Bedding, linen and towels are included.

Our favourite autumn day
If you ask us what to do on an autumn morning, it is always the same answer: walk to Rye.
From White Sand we go through the village and pick up the traffic-free path that runs beside Camber Road all the way into town. It is about three miles and a little over an hour on foot. Out on the marsh there are birds everywhere, the skies are huge, and on the best mornings the mist is still lying over the fields when you set off.
Then it is brunch at The Globe Inn Marsh, where breakfast is served from 9am at weekends, or on a Sunday a roast at The Standard Inn, our favourite Sunday roast in Rye.
Phones stay in pockets. It is family time: just us, Arthur and Dougal. There is a bus between Camber and Rye if legs are tired on the way back, but check the timetable before you rely on it.

Which cottage for an autumn break?
If a fire is the point, these are the five with a real log burner. All of them welcome dogs.

Every other cottage has central heating, and several have an electric or gas fire. If a real fire matters to you, check the cottage page or ask us before you book.
Jury’s Gap or White Sand? At Jury’s Gap the beach is sand and shingle with no dunes, and it goes completely at high water, so time your walk around the tide. White Sand is on the edge of Camber village, with the dunes a short walk from the door.
October half-term at Camber Sands
October half-term is a good week to bring the children: plenty of beach with fewer people on it, and Rye close by if it rains. Half-term dates differ from county to county, so check your school’s before you pick dates, and if you are tied to them, look early.
Room for everyone. Our cottages sleep up to nine, and several sit on the same street if two families want to come together. The cottage pages show who each one suits.
If it rains. Rye is about ten minutes away by car, with its cobbled streets and plenty of cafés for a hot chocolate. Our rainy day guide has more.

What is on around Camber in autumn
Bonfire season. Sussex bonfire season runs from early October into November, with torchlit processions and fireworks. The nearest to us are Rye, Northiam and Hastings. Dates change every year, so check our Sussex bonfire season guide and our Rye Bonfire guide for this year’s.

Autumn with a dog
From 1 October to 30 April dogs are welcome on the whole of Camber Sands, so there are no zones to think about. The beach at Jury’s Gap, behind the Coastguard Cottages, has no dog restrictions at any time of year.

Before you book
What it costs. One price for the whole house, however many of you come, up to the number it sleeps. The total at checkout includes cleaning, with no booking fees.
Logs. From October to March every cottage with a log burner has a starter basket of logs and lighting equipment. After that you are welcome to buy more locally.

Is Camber Sands worth visiting in autumn?
We think it is the best time of year. The beach is much quieter than in summer, and dogs are allowed on all of it from 1 October. Rye is close by for a rainy afternoon.
Can dogs go on Camber Sands in October?
Yes. From 1 October to 30 April dogs are welcome on the whole beach. The summer dog zones only apply from 1 May to 30 September, and the beach at Jury’s Gap has no restrictions at any time of year.
Is the sea warm in autumn?
It is never bath-warm, but on average the sea at Camber is warmer in October than it is in June, because the water holds onto the summer’s heat long after the air has cooled.
