Why trust this guide?
We’re Richard & Sophie, and we live and host here in Camber Sands, five miles from Rye. We make the run into town with our own border terrier, Dougal, most weeks, so this is based on doing it ourselves rather than a round-up written from a desk.
In the past year alone we’ve welcomed over 480 dog-friendly bookings, and in several thousand dog stays since 2009 we’ve never made a single damage deduction. Dogs are genuinely part of how we do things, not a box we tick.
Where the dog-friendly cottages near Rye actually are
Rye itself is lovely, but a lot of the places to stay right in the centre are tucked into historic lanes, with cobbles, steps and limited outside space. Wonderful for a town break, less easy with a sandy dog in tow.
So the better base for a dog-friendly trip is just outside town, where you get the beach, the space and a garden, with Rye a short hop away when you want it. That means Camber Sands and Jury’s Gap, five miles down the road. You get both sides of the trip: wide-open beach on the doorstep, and a proper medieval town for lunch, shops and a rainy afternoon.
Camber Sands or Jury’s Gap: which base suits you?
Both are dog-friendly bases five miles from Rye, but they have a different feel.
White Sand, Camber Sands is the easiest all-round choice. The cottages here have enclosed gardens, you’re a short walk from the dunes, and it’s simple to pop into Rye for food and supplies. Best for families, first visits, and anyone who wants the logistics kept simple.
Jury’s Gap, the Coastguard Cottages is quieter and wilder, with that “end of the world” coastal feel. The Coastguard cottages have enclosed gardens; the Surf Shack cabin has a private garden open to the marsh. Either way, the beach right behind the cottages is dog-friendly all year round with no seasonal zones to worry about. Best for couples and anyone after big skies and a proper switch-off.

The best bit: walking the dog into Rye
You don’t have to drive. The traffic-free path along National Cycle Route 2 runs from Camber into Rye, and we regularly walk it with Dougal in about an hour each way. It’s flat, it’s away from the road, and it turns a simple dog walk into a proper half-day outing.
Time it for lunch in town, stop at Paws n Claws for treats, and wander back along the path in the afternoon. Not many places let you walk the dog from the beach to a medieval town and back, and it’s the kind of thing our guests remember.
If an hour each way is more than your dog fancies, the drive is about twelve minutes, a taxi from town is around £20, and the Stagecoach 102 bus runs through Camber village.
A dog-friendly day out in Rye
Rye is genuinely easy with a dog once you know where to go.
Plenty of the antique shops, galleries and cafes along the cobbled streets are happy to have a well-behaved dog through the door, and the town is compact enough to do on foot. Start on Mermaid Street, wander up towards St Mary’s Church, and let the lanes take you where they will.
For supplies, Paws n Claws in town is the spot for treats and bits you’ve forgotten. Worth knowing before you arrive: Cinque Ports Vets has a Rye branch with out-of-hours cover through the same practice, so save the number just in case.
For a calmer outing, Rye Harbour Nature Reserve is flat, open and full of sky and birdlife. Keep dogs under close control and on a lead around the grazing livestock and in signed areas.
When it comes to food, The Owl in Camber village is the easy dog-friendly local close to the cottages, and The Gallivant welcomes dogs in certain areas if you want something smarter. Rye gives you more choice again. Opening times and dog rules change, so it’s always worth a quick check on the day. Our restaurants guide has our personal picks.
Beach rules, the quick version
On the main Camber Sands beach, dogs are welcome all year, but from 1 May to 30 September they’re kept out of the zoned bathing areas, so in summer you use the signed dog-friendly stretches instead. They’re generous, and breaking the rule can mean a £100 on-the-spot fine, so it’s an easy one to stay on the right side of. Outside that window the whole beach opens up and the dunes are quieter.
Good to know: the stretch right behind the Coastguard Cottages at Jury’s Gap is dog-friendly all year with no seasonal zones, one reason those cottages suit dog owners who visit in summer.
We cover the seasonal map, the exact zones and the safety details in full in our Camber Sands dog-friendly guide.
Getting to Rye, and getting around without a car
Rye is the nearest station, and most London trains involve one change, commonly at Ashford International. From the station it’s roughly £20 in a taxi to the cottages, or the Stagecoach 102 bus through Camber village (a single fare is capped at £3 nationally until at least March 2027, so it’s the cheapest leg). Once you’re here, the traffic-free path means you can reach Rye on foot or by bike with the dog and leave the car where it is. Our car-free guide has the full detail and live timetables.
