1. Dog Friendly Camber Sands: Key Info for 2026
Here’s the need-to-know at a glance — we go deeper on each section below.
- Beach access: From 1 May to 30 September, dogs are welcome only in the clearly signed dog zones — see our guide to dog rules at Camber Sands for the full seasonal details. From 1 October to 30 April, the whole glorious sweep of sand is yours. Always follow on-beach signage and pick up after your dog.
- Leads & the dunes: Keep dogs on a short lead at busy pinch-points and on the dune paths. The dunes are fragile — they’re part of what makes this place so special.
- At Rye Harbour Nature Reserve: Follow the signed lead rules to protect ground-nesting birds. The reserve is magical, but wildlife comes first.
- Local vet: Save Cinque Ports Vets (Rye) in your phone before you travel — just in case.

3. Dog Rules for Camber Sands Beach (2026)
Camber Sands is one of the most beautiful and dog-welcoming beaches in East Sussex — but the seasonal rules matter, and following them keeps everyone happy (including the beach wardens).
🐾 Summer: 1 May – 30 September
Dogs are welcome in the clearly marked designated zones at the beach. These are well-signed at every entrance. Please stick to the zones; the rules protect families and the fragile dune ecosystem.
🐾 Winter: 1 October – 30 April
The whole sweep of sand is open to dogs and their owners. A winter beach walk at Camber — with hardly another soul around — is honestly one of the best-kept secrets on the South Coast.
A tip from us: Tide times make an enormous difference. At low tide you get miles of firm, wide sand that’s perfect for proper zoomies. Check the tide tables and aim for a couple of hours either side of low water.

4. Best Dog Walks Near Camber Sands
Camber Sands isn’t just a beach — it’s a base for some of the finest dog walking in the South East — all accessible as dog walks from your cottage door.
🌅 Camber Dunes at Sunrise
This is our personal favourite, and we’ve done it hundreds of times. Golden light, soft sand underfoot, sea mist lifting off the water — and almost no one else around. Head out early, let the dogs off in the winter zones, and just soak it in. Pure magic.
🦅 Rye Harbour Nature Reserve
Flat, easy paths through a stunning nature reserve with big skies and extraordinary birdlife. Keep dogs on leads where signed — the ground-nesting birds genuinely need your help. It’s roughly 10 minutes from White Sand by car. Read our full Rye Harbour Nature Reserve guide for parking tips and accessibility info. Our best walks near Camber Sands & Rye guide covers even more routes.
🌊 Winchelsea Beach to Pett Level
A wide open shore at low tide with great views across to Dungeness. Check tide times and stick to the firm sand strips for the best walking. For more East Sussex coastline, see our guide to dog-friendly beaches in East Sussex.
🏘️ Rye Town Walls & Landgate Circuit
When you want a break from the coast, Rye is just 10 minutes away. Walk the town walls, drop through the cobbled streets, and finish at one of Rye’s dog-welcoming pubs. Keep dogs on leads on the busier streets.

The Globe Inn — A historic pub in the heart of Rye with a warm welcome for dogs and their owners.
The Standard Inn, Rye — One of the oldest pubs in Rye, dog-friendly and full of character. For even more options in Rye, see our pick of 5 dog-friendly pubs in Rye.

6. What to Pack for a Dog-Friendly Camber Sands Holiday
We’ve hosted hundreds of dog-owning families over the years. The guests who have the smoothest holidays always pack these essentials:
- Collapsible water bowl — there’s fresh water at some beach entry points but not all; don’t rely on it
- Plenty of old towels — sandy, wet dogs are a given; our cottages all have outdoor taps too
- Long line (10–15m) for open spaces plus a short lead for busy areas and dune paths
- Poop bags — more than you think you’ll need
- Spare ID tag with the address and phone number of your cottage (required by law, and just sensible)
- Dog drying robe — Arthur has one and we swear by it
- Any regular medications, vet records, and your pet insurance details
- Dog-friendly sun cream for pale or short-haired breeds visiting in summer
All of our dog friendly holiday cottages in Camber Sands come stocked with doggy treats, bowls, and poop bags — so you’re already ahead of the game the moment you arrive.
7. Vets & Emergencies
We really hope you won’t need this — but it’s always worth knowing before you arrive.
Cinque Ports Vets, Rye is the nearest veterinary practice to Camber Sands. Save their number in your phone before you leave home, and check their website for current opening hours and out-of-hours cover.
8. Dog-Friendly Cottages in Camber Sands — FAQs (2026)
Are dogs allowed on Camber Sands beach all year round?
Yes — with seasonal rules. From 1 May to 30 September, dogs are welcome only in the designated dog zones, which are clearly marked at every beach entrance. From 1 October to 30 April, the entire beach is open to dogs. Always pick up after your dog and follow on-beach signage.
Do I need to keep my dog on a lead at Camber Sands?
Use a lead at busy pinch-points, on the dune paths, and wherever signage asks you to. At Rye Harbour Nature Reserve, keep dogs on leads in all signed areas to protect ground-nesting birds — especially important in spring and early summer.
Where exactly are the dog-friendly zones on Camber Sands?
The zones are clearly marked with signage at every beach entrance — you won’t miss them. For advance planning, download the official dog-zones map from Rother District Council before you travel.
Are your cottages genuinely dog-friendly, or just “pets considered”?
Genuinely dog-friendly. Every one of our dog-friendly Camber Sands cottages has a fully enclosed garden, outdoor tap, and arrives stocked with dog treats, bowls, and poop bags. We’re dog owners ourselves — we know what actually matters.
How many dogs can we bring?
Most of our cottages welcome up to two dogs. A small number accept three. Just let us know when you enquire and we’ll match you with the right property. There’s a small additional charge per dog per stay.
Which dog-friendly cottage in Camber Sands should we choose?
Tell us your group size, whether you need a particularly large garden, and how close to the beach you’d like to be — and we’ll point you straight to the best match from our 26+ properties. Owlers Cottage and Camber Cottage are brilliant family favourites; Mariners Moon and The Hide are ideal for larger groups; Tradewinds is a gorgeous choice for couples.
What’s the best time of year to visit Camber Sands with a dog?
Honestly? October to April is our favourite for dog owners. The whole beach is open, the light is extraordinary, the dunes are quieter, and the pubs are wonderfully cosy. Summer is brilliant too — just plan your beach time around the dog zones and the tide.
Is Camber Sands good for dogs who aren’t confident swimmers?
Absolutely. The beach shelves very gently, the waves are calm by UK standards, and at low tide there are acres of firm, flat sand perfect for paddling and running. It’s one of the reasons Camber is such a hit with dogs of all ages and temperaments.
