Ghostly Half Term Adventures

With Halloween well and truly on the way, we thought it would only be fitting to get you in the spirit of the holiday with some terrifying tales and haunted hot-spots near White Sand. From ghostly apparitions to mysterious noises and chilling touches, we think we may just have a haunting or two on our hands…

Sinister sounds, mysterious aromas and inexplicable cold spots have been reported at many of the castles and abbeys nearby. During your half term holiday at White Sand take a trip to one of these – if you dare.

Devilish Dover Castle

Given that Dover Castle’s turbulent past stretches back over 2,000 years, you may not be entirely surprised to learn that the castle is considered to be one of England’s most haunted. The atmospheric site has certainly produced a spine-tingling tale or two over the years, with some of the most chilling involving the apparition of a mysterious lady in red, and the tragic figure of a Napoleonic drummer boy.

The labyrinth of tunnels that lie underneath have also spawned a number of unsettling stories, with visitors reportedly seeing the ghostly figure of a man dressed in military uniform, and hearing the eerie echoes of slamming doors, typewriters and running boots… overactive imaginations maybe? We dare you to find out!

Venture into the Medieval Underground Works which at the best of times are spooky and where many visitors report a feeling of being watched.

Dover Castle is supposedly one of England’s most haunted castles. It’s not for the faint-hearted!

Day out Idea for the kids at Dover Castle

Be prepared to be scared this autumn half-term as a frighteningly great day out awaits. With over nine ghosts reported to have been seen and heard at Dover Castle, you better keep your wits about you as spooky characters lead you through one of England’s most haunted castles. Dare you walk through the tunnel of terror or make creepy crafts. Enjoy a chillingly fun day out and see if you can unnerve and scare us enough to win a prize for the best children’s Halloween costume, bestowed on the most bloodcurdling attire each day.

Dover for grown ups!

Head to Dover Castle on the 2nd November for an unnerving evening guided tour through Dover Castle’s most haunted areas. You will hear the strange but true experiences of those who work here and find out the myths and legends surrounding this atmospheric ancient site.

Haunted 1066 Battle of Hastings Abbey and Battlefield

It’s not surprising that paranormal phenomena have often been reported over the 900-plus years since the Battle of Hastings.

When it rains, the battlefield seems to be awash with blood. But don’t be afraid: it’s just the iron oxide in the soil mixing with rainwater.

The ghost of Talifer, an invading knight, has been seen riding along in front of his Norman lines, taunting the enemy by singing La Chanson de Roland, before passing a little too close to the English army and being cut down.

On every 14th October, the anniversary of the battle, the ghost of King Harold –  complete with an arrow in his eye –  is said to appear at the place where he fell: the spot now marked by the Harold Stone.

ghostly goings-on have been not only been reported, but also backed up with photographic evidence. A picture taken by a visitor in 2010 shows a shadowy outline of a hooded monk sitting reading,  and just a few years ago another of the site’s visitors captured an image of a body dangling above a door – exactly where a piece of wood, thought to be an old hanging post, still remains. Now if that doesn’t give you the shivers, we’re not sure what will.

Day out Idea for the kids at Battle Abbey

Join Professor Midnight for a spine-tingling ghost walk around the haunted grounds where one of the bloodiest events in England’s history took place. Hear about the site’s sinister past and chilling tales of mysterious monks and spooky soldiers. Then peek into the shadows if you dare!

Suitable for brave adults and children of all ages. Youngsters will also enjoy taking part in the frightfully fun spooky trail – follow the clues and receive a Halloween treat.

You just need to choose your cottage, but be quick as there is very limited availability!
