Good to know
The Surf Shack is a compact cabin in the grounds of our Coastguards Cottages at Jury’s Gap — an exposed coastal location with real character. In winter the wind can howl off the sea and sea mist rolls in — many guests love the drama, but if you prefer a more sheltered setting we have modern cottages nearby at White Sand.
The property is near the Lydd Ranges, a historic military firing range within the Dungeness, Romney Marsh and Rye Bay SSSI. Access to the foreshore is occasionally restricted during live firing exercises (red flags are flown). When not in use, a designated shore path is open — and there are still several miles of beach to explore towards Camber.
Dog-friendly details
The Surf Shack welcomes dogs, and your four-legged companion will love it here. The beach is steps away — over the seawall and onto miles of open sand and shingle. Back at the cabin, the garden gives them a safe spot to rest after a busy beach day.
Muddy-paw tip: towel down at the garden and let them dry before they settle by the log burner.
Beach access: the beach behind Coastguards is dog-friendly all year round with no restrictions — no seasonal zones to worry about. For general info on dogs and beaches in the area, see our Camber Sands for Dogs guide.
