Historical Sites

Over the centuries, East Sussex & Kent coast—as the closest points to mainland Europe—have been the invader’s gateway to Britain, and as such, have witnessed some of the most important moments in the country’s history.

With such a rich past it’s no surprise that this corner of the country is teeming with places of historical significance—from ruins to castles, from ancient woodland to prehistoric coastline.

See where a monumental battle famously reshaped the nation at Battle of Hastings. Explore the moated 1385 Bodian Castle. Visit beautiful town of Rye with its cobbled streets and a history woven with seafaring tales of naval battles, violent storms, lifeboat heroics and smuggling. Step into famous literary settings in the neighbouring Cinque port towns, like Canterbury (Chaucer) and Rochester (Dickens).

Outdoor Activities

Choose the tone for your holiday: Find an adrenaline rush while soaring above the sea on a kite-surfing excursion or hurtling down a zip wire through county parks. Or partake in more relaxing pastimes, like long walks along the many path and cycleways and even longer afternoons spent reclined on the beach. Or mix a bit of both.

Museums

For those of you who like a bit of culture, visit the many museums and galleries found throughout our historic towns. You’ll find vast collections of historical importance, fine art, landscape photography and theatre productions set in some of the most atmospheric locations.

Being only one and a half hours from London you can also make the most of what the capital has to offer, take in a show in the West End, shop in Oxford Street or visit the many iconic sites

Marsh Mellow Guest Book

“Perfect Getaway!” Oct 2015

Our mission was simple – to escape reality for a couple of days and have some quality time together. With Marsh Mellow it was definitely mission accomplished!
I have to say the property is beautifully decorated and maintained immaculately. On arrival we were greeted with a lovely welcome pack that included homemade cookies, cake and locally produced fruit juice. There was also a bottle of locally produced wine waiting for us in the fridge which was very well received after a long journey ( I will now also be ordering some online – delicious!) These touches helped start off a perfect weekend and really set this property apart from others I have stayed in so thank you Richard and Sophie!
We had everything we needed during our stay particularly as we had a 19 month old baby with us. Location wise, Marsh Mellow is perfect and less than 10 minutes in the car was the wonderful town of Rye where we had lunch on our first day.
All in all we were all so impressed with the property and seeing as we are going to make these 2 day breaks more regular, I think we would all definitely consider staying here again..

“Modern, clean holiday home” Sept 2015

We had a great week in Marsh Mellow. The house was very clean, modern and had everything we needed. (I do love things to be really clean and this was perfect!) We were so lucky with the weather and had a full week of sunshine. We spent most days at the beautiful beach which was minutes away. An easy walk for our three, 3 year olds! The beach was one of the most beautiful I have been to in this country and big enough to never feel too over crowded, even in the summer holidays.
A lovely English beach holiday..

“Truly an amazing holiday” June 2015

The house was wonderful with everything you need and more. The bedrooms were stunning, and well presented. House was very mod and beautifully decorated. A main asset to us as well was having a toilet downstairs for parents and children. Towels was also supplied just needing beach towels.
We had a fab holiday with parents in there 80s, 2 granddaughters 2yrs and 3yrs, me, my husband, our down syndrome son who’s 28 and our boxer dog Billy.
We was situated perfectly to the beach, shops pubs and restaurants 5min walk away. Rye was 10min drive which we enjoyed a relaxing walk around, ending up at the fresh fish shop for some tasty prawns, mussels and jellied eels.

It was truly an amazing holiday and we will be returning next year for some more fun by the sea.
We was very touched by the welcoming package that was there when we arrived, it went down rather well, a big thank you for that. Michelle

“Stunning house in a beautiful location” May 2015

Our family of 4 adults and 2 children, and a dog had a very comfortable stay in this gorgeous house. We particularly enjoyed our early morning walks on beautiful Camber Sands beach, and both the children and our dog thoroughly enjoyed exploring the sand dunes. This was our second visit to this coastal gem and we will be returning as soon as we can. Richard and his wife were very helpful, supplying extra bedding promptly when it was required. We also loved exploring Rye’s cobbled High Street. Thank you for a wonderful stay. Marinda

“Lovely holiday in camber” April 2015

We stayed in this cottage in camber at Easter and had a lovely relaxing week. The house looks exactly like the photos and was very clean and light. Despite being next to pontins there was very little noise and the fact that the house is on the end means you have a larger garden and windows in the bathrooms and kitchen. The walk to the beach takes 5 mins through the sand dunes and there is 2 small supermarkets walking distance plus a fish and chip shop. We didn’t eat out at the gallivant as we have a dog and didn’t like the look of the hotel where you could take a dog. We ate at the Kings head rye which is just outside the town and had a fantastic meal and they accept dogs. Dungeness was surreal and worth a visit, battle was good, Hastings less so. We went to Canterbury which was good and rye itself though small is very nice and unspoilt. The holiday renting people were really good – I arranged a sainsburies delivery which they took in for me and put away at no cost. The layout of the house is particularly good as it gives you a second lounge and tv – good if you are holidaying with teenagers. Kirsty

“Perfect holiday house for family or group of friends” July 2014

The description and photos didn’t disappoint in what we were hoping for, with the owners putting top quality furnishings and linen throughout.
Overall, we were very comfortable (family of four, with grandparent with us too), with layout making it easy for us to occupy top floor, and were greeted with lovely welcome pack.
Walk to beach is very easy, only need to be little careful crossing road, and sand dune makes it good exercise. Beach is splendid – massive of space for kids to run around, just need to keep an eye on tide times a bit.
Enjoyed it so much and kids had such good time, planning on returning next year for a week again. Alastair

“Perfect place for a family holiday by the sea” May 2014

Marsh Mellow was a very comfortable home for a family holiday (with a baby and toddler). It was great to have a travel cot provided and the kitchen was well equipped. There are lovely views across the fields from the living room- our little one enjoyed watching the sheep, rabbits and wind turbines!
The house benefits from being located a short walk from beautiful Camber beach which was ideal for lots of sandcastle making and paddling! The beach was often empty and never crowded throughout our stay, We also went on trips to nearby Rye, Dungeoness, Hastings and Bodium castle.
An excellent place to stay in a fab location! Nicola & Alex

“This house was a very welcome change” April 2014

We had a fantastically relaxing break here over Easter 2014. The photos do not do the house justice. It’s brand new with all mod cons (including a great TV and reliable WiFi). It’s tastefully decorated in neutral colours with a nautical themes.

It’s on a modern estate directly adjacent to the Pontins but throughout our stay it was peaceful and quiet. The views to the wind turbines are great: we went out to watch the rabbits playing at dusk.

The hosts are very thoughtful: we had a great welcome pack with milk in the fridge and every detail seemed to be taken care of.

We travelled there and back by public transport and found it very easy. Taxis from Rye station are easy (but need to be booked in advance). There is a bus stop about 200m from the house that goes to Rye, Lydd and Hastings. The nearest place for top quality coffee (that we found) is the Mermaid in Rye.

Having suffered the patchy quality of many houses to rent in the UK, this house was a very welcome change. Matt

“Charming Seaside Cottage + Kite Surfing Thrills” April 2014

A perfect seaside cottage for a group of friends, with everything you need for lots of fun and frolics. Loved the power kites that we could take onto the beach to catch the breeze.

Plenty of good pubs and boozers really close by to finish off a busy day at the beach. Can’t wait to get back to camber this summer! Would be super to get some cycling in next time. Alex

“The great getaway that was just so easy…” April 2014

Having seemingly been stuck in London with a toddler we felt the need to getaway. Friends had suggested Camber Sands as it wouldn’t take too long to drive to from London. We were fortunate enough to book this rental property as it was a newcomer to the market.

Everything was just very convenient. There is a car park in front of the house (great when you have to unload half the house with everything that seems to be needed for a toddler these days!). The property is a new build and consequently has all the mod cons, and feels modern, clean and airy inside. The inside has been very nicely decorated following a maritime theme. The kitchen/diner is on the ground floor whereas the comfortable sitting room is on the first floor.

The house is located within walking distance of the beach. Perfect if you have a toddler and you’ve realised you’ve forgotten something back at the house! It’s also within close proximity of The Beach Bistro at the Gallivant that serves some great locally sourced food.

We had a great getaway and would recommend to anyone. Diane

“Fantastic stay. Lovely house in a great location near the beach” March 2014

My wife and I stayed here with our 3 year daughter for an extended weekend.

We had a lovely time. It is a well equiped clean new house with all mod cons, nicely laid out with kitchen and dining/living room on ground floor opening out to a patio garden. Great for bbq. Upstairs there is a second sizeable but cosy living room, overlooking open fields. The beds are very comfy and we had a nice ensuite.

The house is well located in Camber and is only a 5 minute walk to the sandy beaches of Camber sands. There is a hotel with restaurant that serves excellent food within 5 minutes walk of the house. The town of Rye is a 5 minute car drive away and is well served with may restaurants, pubs, shops and quaint streets. Given its close proximity to Rye, which has an excellent train service to London, the option of travel by train or car is possible to this location. It is a 7 minute taxi ride to the house from Rye train station.

I thoroughly recommend this house to stay either for a couple or family to enjoy the beach, historic town of Rye and beautiful views across the countryside. James

“Lovely house, great location” March 2014

This well-equipped house has beautiful views over farmland and is just a 5 minute walk to the beach at Camber Sands. We went as a family of 5 over a spring weekend and found the accommodation to be very modern, comfortable and more than enough for us. A couple of days of exploring the dunes, the lovely town of Rye (5 minute drive) and BBQing food from the local farm shop made for a great break only 2 hours from our home in London. Ben
